Logan Sargeant confirmed as a 2023 Williams F1 driver

Williams Academy driver Logan Sargeant has been officially confirmed as Alex Albon’s teammate for next season. The American finished in 4th place in the F2 Championship, which was enough for him to secure an FIA Super License.

Sargeant was approached by Williams last year

Ever since the Dorilton Capital bought the Williams F1 team, there have been rumors of an American driver featuring in their team. The last full-time driver from the US was Scott Speed, with Alexander Rossi making a short-lived appearance in 2014 and 2015.

So, in 2021’s United States Grand Prix, Williams announced Logan Sargeant as an Academy driver. Perfect opportunity, at the perfect location. Fast forward a year later, and he gets the chance of his life.

Why choose Sargeant

Looking at stats alone, Sargeant is probably not the best solution for Williams. In terms of results, choosing Felipe Drugovich would make a lot more sense. The Brazilian won the F2 title, as well as four Feature race wins in 2022.

Theo Pourchaire is also another great option. But what Williams wanted to do is to set a precedent. Giving its second car to Sargeant would make its development program infinitely more presentable for future drivers.

“Since joining our Driver Academy at the end of 2021, Logan has been able to fully integrate with the team at Grove while on the simulator and more recently at track during the four free practice sessions he’s participated in,” said Jost Capito. “He’s had a strong rookie season in Formula 2, and we are excited to watch him make the step up in Formula 1. We are here to support that journey with him.”

“Being a part of the Williams Driver Academy for the past year has given me an important platform to develop as a driver and prepare me for this next chapter. I’m ready and excited to be a part of this journey as the team looks to progress up the grid,” was Sargeant’s comment on the great news.
