Drivers warned about exceeding Silverstone track limits

Drivers have been warned to respect the track limits at the high-speed Copse Corner during the British Grand Prix weekend.

The corner, which used to be Turn 1 before the track configuration was changed, features a large run-off area where an advantage can be gained by running over the kerbs.

However it was agreed during the F1 drivers’ briefing on Friday night that any driver who runs wide during qualifying should have their time deleted, whilst any repeat offenders during the race will be penalized.

“We will be adopting a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to cars leaving the track on the exit of turn 9 during qualifying,” read a note from the governing body.

“Unless we are satisfied that a driver left the track at this point for reasons beyond his control, having been forced off the track, for example, every lap time achieved by leaving the track will be deleted.”

The limit also applies in the race, with F1 race director Charlie Whiting adding: “During the race, any driver who appears to have gained a clear and lasting advantage by leaving the track at turn 9, or who repeatedly leaves the track at this corner, will be reported to the stewards.”
