Jonathan Eddolls, the head of trackside engineering at AlphaTauri, stated that the team will be buying fewer parts from Red Bull for its 2023 contender.
Since it is owned by the energy drink giant, AlphaTauri has been notorious for getting near the maximum of available parts from its bigger brother – Red Bull. At times in its history, the Scuderia used chassis entirely built by Red Bull. This happened back when it was called Torro Rosso.
Nowadays, Formula 1 laws state that an outfit must build its own monocoque, nose cone, wings, etc. But also, they are allowed to buy some parts from other teams. These parts are called “transferrable components”. Some of them include the rear impact structure, clutch, inboard front suspension, and more.
Haas is one of the teams that has also been open about purchasing a lot of these components from engine supplier Ferrari. This gave the American outfit a huge boost in its debut campaign in 2016.
However, taking a lot of transferrable components might have some implications. “To take some of their components that we only find out the final design very late in the year, could influence our aero because we’ve developed them around a different geometry,” explained Eddolls.
This should also allow Scuderia AlphaTauri to save weight in places where it wasn’t able to last year. Also, this would make the team a lot more flexible. This is because it won’t need to abide by as many parts, initially designed for another car.
